Pipped at the Post in the Final

April 9, 2019

On Sunday the 7th of April the scene was set for what would be the final regional development series at Burnage RFC. It was clear on arrival all teams were desperate for a win, the competition was high.

In the first game of the day Chargers started strong with an array of Touchdowns. Sammy “the scoring machine” Kiernan touched down twice and Bruce, Beth and Ellie also profited from some great teamwork and set plays. With chargers in sync the score ended 7-0 against a fast improving Spartans side.

Our next game against Chester Cheetahs was back to back with both teams attacking play in full flare it was obvious defence would decide the game. With scores from James, Cropper, Jordan and Bruce the game went to the wire ending 6-7 to Chester.

Looking to build from our defeat to Chester we went into our 3rd game of the day against Orrell with a desire to make amends. Both Ellie and Uzezi Ossuetta went into the corners to kick things off.

With both attacks exchanging blows we conceded to a lovely set play from Orrell. Nevertheless Chargers' chat, communication and defensive speed paid dividends with a further 3 breakaway tries from latecomer Rob, co-coach Adam and the not so quick Jordan. The score ended 5-1 Chargers.

As the day went on, spirits were high and team bonding was at it’s peak with James and Pete going as far as to share deodorant. Jokes aside anticipation was high going into the last pool game against the reigning champs Blaze.

Knowing we had improved from previous tournaments we played with confidence and cohesion to kick off the game with a signature Chargers sweep play into the corner. Nevertheless blaze hit back straight away with a nice set play move through the middle, however Pete ignited the team as he faked a subbing move only to pirouette up the sidelines and glide in. With heads up we closed the game off with tries from James, Cropper, Crosse and Stefan. The game ended 8-3 Chargers setting up a rematch in the final against Chester cheetahs.

The electricity in the air was tense as the teams walked onto the pitch for the Cup Final. The first half was as close as bread and butter with both teams punishing small defensive errors. The half ended Chargers 4 - Cheetahs 3.

Heading into the last 12mins it was neck and neck until the dazzling feet of Bruce left a Cheetah falling over on the line, like Bambi on ice, allowing for an easy place of the ball.

Nevertheless the Cheetahs bit back and scored a back leaving the game 5-6 to Chester Cheetahs.

Although not the outcome we wanted it was clear how much everyone has developed not just as individuals but as a team. What a way to finish the series! Thank you to everyone involved in organising and refereeing the day.

Lastly a congratulations to fellow charger Bruce who has officially passed his Level One Refereeing Course. Epic work ⚡
